Lots of fun programs to help Central Indiana Race fans get the 105th Indy 500 engines running

Ahead of the 105th Indianapolis 500 Race presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 30, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is partnering with many organizations in central Indiana to capitalize on the excitement, tradition and of the Indy 500 pageantry and provide racing fans with many opportunities to be a part of the May celebration.

“No event defines a single city more than ‘The Greatest Show in Running’ defines the city of Indianapolis, a tradition in itself stretching back over a century,” said IMS President J. Douglas Boles. “One of the best traditions where tradition never ends is the intense community spirit of this race. This year, it means the world to us that these community programs are coming back and running fans can interact with the month of May and the big organizations in central Indiana.

One way for racing fans to celebrate this year’s race is to be a part of the all-new “500 House Show.”People can participate by decorating their backyard or home with a race theme, having a safe and fun Porch Party, and showing off that incredible civic pride that reigns in the hearts of all Hoosiers. It culminates with a “reverse parade” on Saturday May 29 with the 33 pilots participating in the Indianapolis 500.

Racing fans can find out more and register their home for the “500 Spectacle of Homes” by visiting IMS.com/Spectacle.

Porch parts, one of the most popular ways for racing fans to boost their excitement for the month of May, will be part of the “500 Spectacle of Homes”. Racing fans are encouraged to host a safe and socially distant Porch Party with friends and neighbors. The first Porch Night of 2021 will take place at 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, May 7 at the Harrison Center for the Arts.

Also on Friday, racing fans can participate in one of the easiest ways to show their racing pride: 500 Fashion Fridays. Racing fans are encouraged to wear their best checkered flag outfit or racing gear to amplify the May spirit and share their look on social media using the hashtag # 500Fashion.

Additionally, on the evening of Thursday, May 6, IMS will partner with Downtown Indy, Inc. and the Indianapolis Arts Council to launch 2021 “Welcome fans of the race” artwork during Shining a Light on Monument Circle, which features a video projection illuminating the buildings surrounding Indy’s Monument Circle. This show will be playing throughout May and can be seen by anyone walking around downtown Indy.

This year’s program expanded into the realm of digital art as five artists created “Welcome Race Fans” signs using the animated GIF format. These GIFs will be featured on IMS social media, websites, onsite locations, and throughout Indianapolis. This year’s artists are Petronio Bendito, Rob Day, Randi Frye, Sasan Kayyod and Madison Watson.

In addition, the Indy 500 downtown decor the invasion continues this year so that the signature Indianapolis hospitality is evident to visitors during the month of May. In collaboration with the Indianapolis Airport Authority and Visit Indy, beautiful Where Tradition Never Stops signage will welcome racing fans at Indianapolis International Airport and throughout downtown Indianapolis.

In addition, IMS will rename the streets of downtown Indianapolis in honor of the star athletes of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Several pilots engaged in the Indianapolis 500 will be installing traffic signs during the first week of May. Racing fans are encouraged to take photos with their favorite display and share on social media for the whole world to see by tagging @IMS.

On Wednesday, May 26, in the days leading up to the Indianapolis 500, IMS and INDYCAR will host Indianapolis 500 Community Day. Drivers participating in the race will take part in virtual activations with a dozen schools in the Speedway, Wayne Township and Indianapolis Public School systems, reaching more than 2,000 students.
