Indianapolis Colts updated salary cap with Eric Fisher deal included
The Indianapolis Colts signed a one-year contract with veteran left tackle Eric Fisher following the 2021 NFL Draft and with the release of the details of that contract we have a clear picture of the salary cap situation in the ‘team.
Fisher’s one-year deal, worth $ 8.38 million, takes the Colts to around $ 12.2 million in effective salary cap space, according to Over The Cap.
The effective salary cap represents the 51 highest salaries on the list. This is generally how the salary cap is perceived, because if they represented the 90 players during the offseason, the teams would be well above the cap set by the league.
While free agency is over and most of the major signings have already taken place, the Colts will be keeping a close eye on their cap situation given the upcoming extensions that are expected to be granted.
Linebacker Darius Leonard could very well reset the market to his position when his new contract extension is over. With Leonard, the Colts will seek to lock up right tackle Braden Smith for a long contract.
While Leonard and Smith are the easy picks for extensions and will get expensive offers, it wouldn’t be at all a surprise if running back Nyheim Hines also got an extension of around two or three years.
The Colts will have a lot of decisions to make, but those expansions should arrive this summer before the team arrives for training camp.
