Actor Bo Burnham to play NBA legend in new HBO series

Larry Bird’s career in the NBA with the Boston Celtics was closely linked to that of Earvin “Magic” Johnson and other Los Angeles Lakers greats during those teams’ rivalry so many years ago.

So, it makes sense for someone to play “Larry Legend” in an upcoming HBO series about the Lakers “Showtime Era” from the 1980s, right?

Bo Burnham, do you want to go ahead?

Burnham, who first rose to fame as a YouTube sensation, according to Variety magazine, before moving on to stand-up comedy and film and television roles, may seem an unlikely choice to play Indiana basketball legend Bird known affectionately as the “Hick of French Lick”.

What did he do? This time Larry Bird scored 47 points – all with his left hand

So far, he has appeared on screen in films such as “The Big Sick” and “Promising Young Woman”, as well as in television shows such as “The Kroll Show” and “Parks and Recreation”.

But there is the first Indiana connection. After all, “Parks and Recreation” was based in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. (OK, that’s a bit of a stretch.)

Burnham is from Massachusetts, and while it’s not Indiana, it’s a place Bird is still revered after having played his entire career with the Celtics while leading them to three NBA Championships, including one. Lakers defeat in a seven-game championship streak after the 1983-84 season.

Oh, did we mention Burnham’s size? He is 6-5 years old.

While Larry Bird was actually 6-9 years old, that’s not a bad height for an actor playing an NBA legend.
