The Botox Treatment

There are many doctors that have been using Botox for years to treat facial creases and wrinkles. The name Botox is a toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Other brand names on the market are Xeomin and Dysport.

How does the Botox procedure work?
In simple terms, by injecting Botox into the desired area it blocks signals that go to the nerves then to the muscles. This leaves the injected muscle unable to contract which makes the wrinkles soften and relax.

The most common areas that Botox is used are your frown lines, lines around the eyes which are called crow’s feet and forehead lines. If you have wrinkles that were caused by the sun or gravity, then the Botox treatment will not work. Other areas Botox can be used are your chin, neck, corner of mouth and lip lines.

What is the procedure for Botox?
Actually, Botox is a very simple procedure and only takes a few minutes to administer. It is injected by using a very fine needle into the specified muscles and does not require anesthesia. At best there might be a slight discomfort when the needle enters the skin.
Once your injections are complete it usually takes anywhere between 5 to 7 days to have a full effect. It is a good idea to stop taking any anti-inflammatory drugs and aspirin 14 days prior to your Botox treatment. This will reduce and type of bruising where the injections were made.

Once I have the Botox injections how long will they last?
The results of the Botox injections typically will last from 4 to 6 months then your muscle action slowly returns. The wrinkles and lines begin to become noticeable again.
As more treatments are applied over the months the wrinkles and lines can appear less severe each time since the muscles are being trained to relax.

Are there any side effects with the Botox treatment?
The most common side effect from the Botox treatment is temporary bruising. Some people might experience a headache but this is very uncommon. If you are having Botox done around your eyes you could see eyelid drooping which usually disappears in about 3 weeks. It is important to not rub the treated area for the first 12 hours after the Botox injections.
